La técnica de los azulejos con relieve se usaba en la antigüedad en escudos heráldicos que revestían las tumbas de los nobles y militares participantes en la Reconquista. Una técnica que surge de las culturas hispanomusulmanes.
Con el azulejo pintado, comenzó un extraordinario despliegue artístico que influyó de forma muy notoria en los edificios públicos de otros países, como Portugal.
